The sea temp is at 14c+ so even committed poolites should be back in the sea and getting prepared for the RNLI Myrtleville to Church Bay swim on June 10th 😁
Get in and get entered on Active.

If you don’t have your entry in for the RNLI Myrtleville to Church Bay swim on June 10, do it right now, right here! As if it wasn’t enough to be a part of the WORLD’S NO.1 SWIM (source – B. Lynch), by entering you could meet one of the biggest stars of open water swimming. He has followed the masses to Myrtleville and declared himself, by his actions, to be the Myrtlevillian at heart that we all knew he really was.
Yes, in the news of the year, this giant of our sport has made the life-changing decision to take a job in Ringaskiddy to be close to his new swim base in Myrtleville. With 8am work starts, he’s planning early swims and plenty of them – right here with us in Myrtleville.
Finbarr Hedderman is coming to our beach!! Photographed recently at the announcement of his transfer from some other place down West, he made sure Rob The Bull wasn’t around, then confirmed he was coming to the home of swimming, down Myrtleville way.

Delighted you’ve finally come out as a Myrtlevillian, Finbarr. You’ll never be just a number to us.
Let’s all give him a big welcome and be sure to get his autograph on June 10th. Enter Now (as long as you’ve done 1,500m in the sea…) 🙂
Well done to all the organisers and participants at the first event of the year, the Bulman swim yesterday. Great to see funds raised for the RNLI.
Thanks to those participants who went home and immediately entered the June 10 RNLI Myrtleville to Church Bay swim – you know who you are! For the rest of you, congratulations on getting your qualifier done and get entered now 🙂

Entries for the world’s most important swim, the RNLI Myrtleville – Church Bay on June 10th, are coming in steadily, but it’s worrying how many people are putting off their qualifying 1,500m sea swim –
“until May”. It’s May now. Has been for ten days.
“until it’s warmer”. It’s Ireland. Don’t delay for what may never be. Anyway, the sea is up over 12c. Our swim often runs at 13c. Get used to it by swimming in it.
“until closer to the swim”. Under 30 days. Tick Tock.
“until my pool classes finish”. Pool? Wha’? Get outta there.
By way of encouragement for the masses, Mae Irwin joined us to do 2km in Myrtleville this week. At dawn. Twice – Monday and Wednesday, so far. Just to show it’s fine for anyone who was putting it off.

Mae Irwin before this morning’s dawn swim to show there’s no excuse not to be in the sea.
Mae is 10. Ten. Years. Old.
So, tell me again – what’s your excuse?
Get in. Get qualified. Get entered. Mae says it’s fine.
Thanks to Donna Galvin and Eoin O’Riordan for scheduling this perfectly timed qualifier for our RNLI swim on June 10 😉

Today’s a very exciting day for our daily swimmer, Denis Condon (not to be confused with his criminal alter-ego, Denis Cregan-Condon) as he turns 65. Apparently Denis has been waiting for the free travel pass for a long time now and was thrilled that the day had arrived. Unfortunately, he had missed the change in legislation that moved the glorious free-pass day to the 66th birthday. So, we’re waiting for next year now.
In the meantime, Daniel – our local Barnsley lad – gave Denis a tailor-made pass just for himself. No problem getting on any bus with that one.

A very Happy Birthday, Denis. Swimming in Myrtleville wouldn’t be the same without you.
Entries are coming in steadily and with lots of people now getting 1,500m+ done in the sea, make sure to get yours in for June 10th as well. The swim is now an event of the Cork Harbour Festival and will take place on the same day as the Ocean to City Race.
The 2017 RNLI Myrtleville to Church Bay (entrance to Cork Harbour) 2km open water sea swim will take place on Saturday, June 10th at 5.00pm.
Participants must have submitted their entry online. We can’t accept entries on the day.

From Angela Harris & Carol Cashell:
** For 2017 – you need to email your name that you will be there on 6th May **
To coincide with the Pieta House Darkness into Light Events, (See their page here) we are holding a Darkness into Light Swim at Myrtleville (as an alternative to the 80 runs being planned that morning!).
Meet by 4:40am & Swim at 5:00am on Sat 6th May (Civil Twilight is at 05:15, Sunrise is at 05:55).
Some Notes on the Swim:
Respect the time of day – arrive quietly, avoid shouting, slamming doors etc, common sense really, just be mindful of the sleeping residents.

As this is a night swim (to start), swimmers must have glow sticks on their hats and togs/wetsuits.
There is a link below to show you what the disposable single use glow sticks are like. These are an ideal alternative to the pricier reusable light (but that does have hundreds of hours light on it). It’s worth it to buy a batch of the snap&glow sticks if you will be doing more night swims over the next year or so!
There are cheap jewellery disposable versions in EuroGiant/Dealz etc, but these are not very bright out at sea and they tend to not stay in place too easily (they are not really made for sea swimming!). These should only be used as fun top-ups to the better stronger glow sticks. Plan ahead, do some research online, pair up with someone to share the costs of buying the glow sticks (share shipping costs etc).
Check these out on Amazon as an example of what you are looking for, for one time use, glow sticks. There is also an Irish Website that sells them.
The reusable night lights for your goggle straps are Called ‘Guardian Adventure lights’ (they can be bought in Centra Crosshaven or CH Marine, Cork). If you want to buy them online, just Click!
Finally, I shouldn’t have to remind you, but as always, this swim is weather dependent :-
And Really this is a Finally, If anyone is willing to help out and stay on the beach while we swim and count us in/out, we’d love to have you, and also, anyone willing to kayak, we’d love to have you there too.. We’ll feed you coffee and cake (well, maybe not cake at 5am, but the offer stands!).

The world-famous 6 pm Myrtleville Monday swims are recommencing on Monday, March 27th, once the clocks have sprung forward.
If you’re going to join the fun for the first time, be sure to read these various pieces of advice from experienced open water swimmers:
https://myrtlevilleswimmers.com/routes-and-safety/
If you’re an experienced open water swimmer – read them anyway. No harm reminding ourselves that it’s ALL ABOUT SWIMMING SAFELY.
Let’s get the Summer started 🙂
