Happy Birthday to one of the good guys

Today’s a very exciting day for our daily swimmer, Denis Condon (not to be confused with his criminal alter-ego, Denis Cregan-Condon) as he turns 65.  Apparently Denis has been waiting for the free travel pass for a long time now and was thrilled that the day had arrived.   Unfortunately, he had missed the change in legislation that moved the glorious free-pass day to the 66th birthday.  So, we’re waiting for next year now.

In the meantime, Daniel – our local Barnsley lad – gave Denis a tailor-made pass just for himself.  No problem getting on any bus with that one.

A very Happy Birthday, Denis.  Swimming in Myrtleville wouldn’t be the same without you.

REMINDER: Darkness into Light SWIM – May 6th, 2017

From Angela Harris & Carol Cashell:

** For 2017 – you need to email your name that you will be there on 6th May **

  • dilcorkswim@gmail.com and tell us your name please.

To coincide with the Pieta House Darkness into Light Events, (See their page here) we are holding a Darkness into Light Swim at Myrtleville (as an alternative to the 80 runs being planned that morning!).

Meet by 4:40am & Swim at 5:00am on Sat 6th May (Civil Twilight is at 05:15, Sunrise is at 05:55).

Some Notes on the Swim:

Respect the time of day – arrive quietly, avoid shouting, slamming doors etc, common sense really, just be mindful of the sleeping residents.

  • There will be a donation Bucket for contributions to Pieta House.
  • Meet by 4:40am at the latest
  • Safety Briefing at 4:55am (and we will number everyone’s hands for check-in/check-out).  Please report your number on the way out.
  • TITW (Toes in the Water!) by 5:00am
  • Swim a Max of 30mins (for safety reasons, please adhere). Whatever your speed, turn back after 10-15mins. 5mins is also an acceptable swim time.
  • DO NOT swim on your own, swim in 2s/3s, stick with your swim buddy so you can talk to them to check in with each other, don’t swim in huge groups, you’d be calling names all the time and your voices will travel over the water!. There will be less stop/starting with smaller groups.
  • We will meet at the bottom of the steps at 4:45, away from the houses to make sure we are all glowing.
  • As the colour of Pieta House is yellow, if you have a yellow hat, or a hat with yellow in it, wear it, it’ll be our nod to the Cause.
  • Remember it’s only May, expect the air to be cool at that hour. Have the layers of clothes ready for after the swim, and of course the Hot Flask for a cuppa!.
  • Bring a Flash light, you’d be surprised what you can’t find in the dark in the car!
  • After you get changed, and have your cuppa, and are wrapped up warm, enjoy the sunrise 🙂

Respect the time of day – arrive quietly, avoid shouting, slamming doors etc, common sense really, just be mindful of the sleeping residents.

As this is a night swim (to start), swimmers must have glow sticks on their hats and togs/wetsuits.

There is a link below to show you what the disposable single use glow sticks are like. These are an ideal alternative to the pricier reusable light (but that does have hundreds of hours light on it). It’s worth it to buy a batch of the snap&glow sticks if you will be doing more night swims over the next year or so!

There are cheap jewellery disposable versions in EuroGiant/Dealz etc, but these are not very bright out at sea and they tend to not stay in place too easily (they are not really made for sea swimming!). These should only be used as fun top-ups to the better stronger glow sticks. Plan ahead, do some research online, pair up with someone to share the costs of buying the glow sticks (share shipping costs etc).

Check these out on Amazon as an example of what you are looking for, for one time use, glow sticks.  There is also an Irish Website that sells them.

The reusable night lights for your goggle straps are Called ‘Guardian Adventure lights’ (they can be bought in Centra Crosshaven or CH Marine, Cork). If you want to buy them online, just Click!

Finally, I shouldn’t have to remind you, but as always, this swim is weather dependent :-

And Really this is a Finally, If anyone is willing to help out and stay on the beach while we swim and count us in/out, we’d love to have you, and also, anyone willing to kayak, we’d love to have you there too.. We’ll feed you coffee and cake (well, maybe not cake at 5am, but the offer stands!).

Ray Darcy Show enlivened by Myrtlevillians

In case you missed it, two of our fellow swimmers (and now meedja stars) were on the Ray Darcy Show on Wednesday.  The podcast link is here and they are in the full first ten minutes, then intermittently with Colin Hay from ’80s band, Men at Work for the next ten.

Fantastic job.  Apologies for the imperfect image I screen captured from this video.

Never give up on your dreams

It’s not just one of those syrupy, Disney-style pieces of advice, it’s true – you should chase your dreams.  Take Gary Frost, for example. Not a lot of people know this (Gary being one of them) but he’s always wanted a career in modelling and he is busy following that dream.  He’s building a portfolio of pictures for his resumé and even hit the USA recently to tout his offerings.

With the full support of Siobhan Russell (Happy Birthday!) and all of us in Myrtleville, here’s a few examples of Gary’s reach for the stars.  We support you all the way, Gary.

Firstly, one of the original poses – and many would say, still the best.  Cracks me up, every time.  Still no idea what he was doing.Open water, sea swimming in Cork, Ireland

Gary’s modelling focus is on the “man’s man” market.  Here’s a couple of his classic “cowboy needing a horse” or “gimme a guitar and I’ll headbang” straddle-shots.

As mentioned, Gary went Stateside recently to gauge the interest in his burgeoning career and made the time to get a pic taken with a celeb in Alcatraz.  The Hat, of course.  You’d have to wonder what the girl looking over in the background makes of it..

Just last weekend, Gary was showing he still has the legs for the market.  Despite comments from certain parties (ah, Denis, leave him alone) that over-40’s shouldn’t wear shorts, Gary was out and proud (from a knees perspective, we hasten to add).  The guy in the black plastic bag was just there for contrast.

Leaving no stone unturned in his quest, Gary has also begun to replicate famous movie scenes – to showcase his repertoire.  Here he is channeling Tom Hanks in Castaway, going after the fish with just a stick/spear.  You have to admire his dedication.

Keep chasing that dream, Gary.  Dulux could come calling soon for a younger market.  “Invincibles 2 – just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water…..”.

Monday nights are back for 2017

The world-famous 6 pm Myrtleville Monday swims are recommencing on Monday, March 27th, once the clocks have sprung forward.

If you’re going to join the fun for the first time, be sure to read these various pieces of advice from experienced open water swimmers:

https://myrtlevilleswimmers.com/routes-and-safety/

If you’re an experienced open water swimmer – read them anyway.  No harm reminding ourselves that it’s ALL ABOUT SWIMMING SAFELY.

Let’s get the Summer started 🙂

Community Service

They say crime never pays and even the most experienced master-criminals run the risk of getting caught and doing time.

Our own local crime-boss, Denis Cregan-Condon, was done for one of his scams recently.   To avoid a spell inside, he plea-bargained the sentence down to community service – he hoodwinked the judge into believing he would be maintaining the showers in Myrtleville.

The wily old fox pulls up in the Mobile Sales Yaris every morning, goes for a swim, deploys the brush for five minutes and fecks off (after the cakes are finished).

No wonder he’s smiling 🙂

Hot Hat

Much as it likes the cold, The Hat took a quick trip to the sun to support Eoin Lowry in the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Triathlon today. Nice one, Eoin.

By the way Eoin, your quick application to have today’s swim approved as your qualifier for the Myrtleville – Church Bay swim on June 10 was rejected by the applications committee. Too hot, boy, too hot.
