Entry form completion – some guidance.

As the entries come in for the RNLI Myrtleville-Church Bay swim on July 4, 2015, it’s noticeable that some swimmers either don’t understand the seriousness of the qualifying swim requirements or are simply trying to trade on past glories.  A sample of the – failed – submissions under qualifying swims are as follows:

Qualifying Swims:

  • 20ft paddle in the kids pool in Leisure World May 2013
  • Plenty
  • Would you like to see my world rankings for 1500m… will that count 🙂
  • 10 laps of San Francisco Bay (I swear !!)
  • Managed it last year
  • Lots (this from the man who in 2014 said: Just lots, more than you can imagine)
  • Swam in the pool at Source with Bernard

Of course, none of these attempted entries passed scrutiny.  Lads (and Lassies – ye’re no better) – there’ll be no living in the past now.  The Myrtleville Is Not A Club Annual Best Swim In The World Entry Validation Sub-Committee (or MINACABSITWEVSC for short) won’t stand for this kind of flippancy and blatant flouting of the rules.

Either do the required qualifying swims – in 2015, mind – or entries just won’t be accepted.  ‘Tis a disappointment, really.  I’d expect it from the fella below, but the rest of ye?  Sure, you can’t be doin’ that lads.

As we tick down to just five weeks to go to the RNLI Myrtleville-Church Bay swim on July 4, 2015, we’re going back to 2011 for the always popular OWS GTA (Guess The Ass) competition! Go on, guess, who could it be?

Six weeks to go to the sixth running of the RNLI Myrtleville – Church Bay Swim. Don’t miss this event.  Get swimming and entering.

In the earlier days of the event, there wasn’t a clear distinction between Administration staff and Competitors.

B. Lynch would give the safety briefing, then run to the nearest phone box (tough going from Myrtleville, to be fair) and change in to his superman Orca costume.  Ta Da!!

Seven weeks to go.  Don’t miss this event.  Get swimming and entering.

In 2011, the swim was moved to Camden, due to unfavourable weather at Myrtleville.  Judging on the picture below, they bashed down the metal fences to get in there – although that could have been done by Micky, Kenneth or Roy, I suppose.

Then a mad fella in a wetsuit sent them forth into the sea.  Plenty of them looked dubious about it.  Good to see Moz had used a few bottles of fake tan and had waxed for the day.

To be fair, it must have been bad if even No. 55 was biting his nails in anticipation.

Entries are coming in steadily for this fantastic swim.  Get yours in here.

This is the sixth running of the event and I thought a few blasts from the past would be appropriate.  With thanks to Howard Crowdy.

Seriously, look at de baba at the back.  Ah, Finbarr….were you about 15?

Ossi is smiling in that one but, at times, he has been know to be a bit….precise or maybe Germanic, shall we say.  Apparently on the day of this first swim it was scheduled to start at 2.30pm.  There was no way that Ossi was going to begin until the appointed time.  As for the rest of the entrants….they were a bit more on the Irish side.

RNLI Myrtleville – Church Bay swim 2015: 8 weeks to go!

The RNLI Myrtleville to Church Bay (entrance to Cork Harbour) 2km open water sea swim takes place on Saturday 4th July at 6.00pm on an incoming tide. Entry fee is €15, payable on the evening and donated to Crosshaven RNLI, but you must have submitted your entry online.

All participants must be able to verify a minimum of one 1,500m open water swim in 2015. We strongly recommend you have done a longer distance – or several 1,500m swims. This is a fantastic, but challenging swim and not to be attempted without proper preparation.

Courtmacsherry Lifeboat swim

The 5th Annual Courtmacsherry Lifeboat Swim takes place at Blind Strand, near the picturesque fishing village of Courtmacsherry at noon on Saturday, July 25th.

All proceeds from the swim go to the Courtmacsherry Lifeboat and Swim Ireland membership is not required.

Registration this year is via Active and closes on Thursday, July 23rd.

Courtmacsherry Lifeboat Swim Report

On Saturday, August 23rd at 4.00pm, 93 swimmers took to the water for the 4th annual Courtmacsherry Lifeboat swim.  53 of these completed the longer 3K swim with the other 40 completing 1.5K.

The swim was supported by 9 kayakers, 3 support boats and the Lifeboat.  We also had volunteers assist with registration, time keeping, photographs, markers, liaising with the Lifeboat poeple and parking.  Thanks to everyone who volunteered.  The swim could not happen without them.

Beginish swim presentation

Rob Bohane insisted on coming to his favourite swimming spot to present Jim Shalloo’s prize from the Beginish Swim.  The presentation duly took place at 06.15 on Tuesday.

Courtmacsherry Lifeboat Swim 2014

The 4th Annual Courtmacsherry Lifeboat Swim takes place at Blind Strand, near the picturesque fishing village of Courtmacsherry at 4.00pm on Saturday, August 23rd. Courtmacsherry is a 45 minute drive from the Bandon Road roundabout.  The swim will be well sign posted from the village.  Please leave plenty of time for parking and registration.  The safety briefing will take place at 3.45pm.

The swim course starts on the beach at Blind Strand and proceeds anti-clockwise around 2 markers.

Participants can choose between 1 lap(1.5K) or 2 laps(3K). Swimmers who elect to do 2 laps will run/walk a short distance on the beach prior to starting lap 2.

The Courtmacsherry volunteers will provide soup and sandwiches for all participants and volunteers. Our sponsors, Trend Micro, will provide the first 100 swimmers to register on the day with a Silicone swim cap.

All proceeds from the swim go to the Courtmacsherry Lifeboat and Swim Ireland membership is not required.

Registration this year is online via Active and closes on Wednesday, August 20th.

If you know of anyone who would like to volunteer to kayak, please have them contact me directly.
