Warmer water than June…keep swimming!

The highest sea temperature we recorded in June was 13.6c, early in the month.  It shot up after that with the heatwave, but we had 10.7c late in June when it dropped back suddenly for a few days.

This weekend, nearly into November, it’s 14c in the sea at Myrtleville. There’s no excuse to abandon the sea for the pool for a while yet – apart from the odd storm frothing up the water!

Denis Condon is still in daily and joined by several others at various stages during the week.

Keep swimming – in the sea 🙂

Last Monday night of 2013

Hard to believe it’s over for another year.  We had a huge increase in numbers for Myrtleville Mondays this year, but there was only a hard core left, on a bad night for the last one.

Last Monday of 2013 – just three swimmers – Tom McCarthy, Bernard Lynch & John Russell – with Denis Condon: 21/10/2013.

Anne Sheehy brought her camera and got a couple of pictures. I think she was using the Siobhan Russell Technique for rough days (“No, I’m not going in there – someone has to take the pictures…..on you go, the rest of you……and remember to smile for the camera…..”).

Tom McCarthy braves the waves – 21/1o/2013.

John Russell & Bernard Lynch – it does look a bit lumpy…21/10/2013.

See you all on Monday, March 31, 2014.  Only 160 Days to go 🙂

Shift work

It’s so busy at the beach, we’re working in shifts.  First group in on Saturday was for Gary Frost’s birthday sunrise swim, with full outdoor catering afterwards.

Gary Frost’s birthday group – too many to name, but that’s Gary with the balloon on the far left and Lemmy the Dog is there too.

Second shift was just in time for the ferry to pass. Welcome back to Maeve and welcome to David Dineen, who moved to Crosshaven recently.

David Dineen, Ciaran Byrne, Rob “it’s much easier to get parking in Sandycove” Bohane, Bernard Lynch, Damian O’Neill, Maeve Mulcahy, Eddie Irwin and Neddy “hurry up, it’s cold” Irwin.

The third shift got creative and took one car to Fountainstown, then swam back to Myrtleville.

Ross O’Connor, Keith Hyde, Aidan Mangan & Kieran Callinan.

A standard time of 8.15am on Saturdays will run throughout the Winter.  It’s over 15c in the water, so it’s not time to even think about cold water yet.

If you’re looking to swim with others and don’t have a group, that’s the time to aim for. Everyone welcome.

Windswept and Interesting….

Several regulars missing, but the flag still flown by a hardy bunch of Monday-nighters! Sea temps are staying over 15C, so once you get past the waves at the beach – and the weed – it’s very nice.

Windy & wavy, but warm – Myrtleville, Monday September 30, 2013.

Tom McCarthy seems to be everywhere these days – pictures abound of him in action in Rocky Bay, Sandycove, Courtmacsherry and back again to Myrtleville.  What a man!

Denis Condon is also seeing out the OW season in style, racing the last two weekends: he still doesn’t miss Monday night, though…..

Siobhan finally gets in front of the camera again – finished her sea swim and heading for the pool next: flying it, she is 🙂

Just October 7th, 14th and 21st for the Monday nights.  See you next week.

Stormy Monday

We really got lucky with the weather last Saturday – if we had faced this Monday’s weather, it would have meant another swim cancellation.  Monday was great fun to surf around, though…for those willing to try it….

Hmmmm – will I go in or won’t I? No….Siobhan opts for the “I’m taking pictures” option…

Next in were Diarmuid Herlihy & Rian Herlihy – Rian is swimming the Straits of Gibraltar in 2014.  Diarmuid already knows the route!

Monday nights will continue until October 21st – the clocks go back on October 27th, so that will be that.

We’re also swimming at 8.15am on Saturdays, which will continue right through the Winter.  Some afternoon swims are also planned and we’ll post these details once we’ve worked them out.  All welcome, as ever.

Myrtleville Mondays just keep on rolling.

After two great performances in The Lost Sheep at the weekend, Conor and Ronan were feeling invincible and went for the water in togs for a relaxing dip.  A few shivers afterwards though….

Ironmen – the McCarthy brothers throw off the wetsuits.

Still lots of groups going out all evening, although there’s definitely a clear split in this picture.

The fourth separate group heading out on Monday – busy beach.

Siobhan is always stuck behind the camera, but just couldn’t take any more last night..

That’s enough pictures of Michelle – I’M getting in this one – Siobhan grabs her place.

The RNLI Myrtleville to Church Bay on Sept. 21st is next up – more details on this site over the coming week.

Long march to the island

The hopes of Myrtleville Swimmers in the Sandycove Challenge tomorrow rest on our seasoned campaigners, Carol Cashell and Eddie Irwin.  Committed Myrtlevillians and founders of the ABS campaign, they travel the long road to the Island on Saturday with our best wishes and some tea and sandwiches for the journey – they’re bound to get hungry going all that way (right, Rob?) 🙂 🙂

You’ll have to read the replies below for the amended picture to make any sense – if even then.

Lots and lots of Myrtlevillians.

Dawn to Dusk – the sea is open

Bernard Lynch took this lovely shot on Tuesday morning, down for an early swim.

Fourteen hours later, Siobhan Russell got this picture of her group after their swim.  Moray and Clodagh are in Crosshaven Tri for the first time this weekend and training hard for it.

Swim to Church Bay on September 1st

With Ian Venner on boat support, Ger Venner, Fiona Gough, Michelle Glossop Smyth and Sean Foley left Myrtleville at 15.15 on Sunday, with HW at 15.42.  They swam to Church Bay in a slight SW sea, taking 52 minutes.  A great swim, well managed.  Well done to all.
