Beach war

Siobhan Russell, as ever, has been busy recording the activities at the beach.  With lots of competitive swims going on and moving closer to the Crosshaven Triathlon, it can get a bit heated at times.  Factions and splinter groups definitely appearing….

I don’t know – and I don’t want to know.

Time to get back to what it’s all about….

Race from the beach – serious Tri preparations going on now.

Speaking of serious swims, Trevor Malone broke the fastest time for an Irish swimmer from Africa to Europe in the last few weeks.  As usual, Bernard was straight in for the photo with the returning hero.  Here they are – to quote Carol Cashell – brown and browner.

The red-head convention is under way shortly in Crosshaven, but Joleen Cronin still has to get her work done for her first attempt at the Crosshaven Triathlon on September 7th.  She’s pictured below with fellow first-timer, Clodagh Monks and our intrepid photographer, Siobhan.  150 individuals and 60 teams are entered and entries are closed. Another fantastic effort by all concerned.

Finally, apparently Tara O’Connell was determined to show off her Barleycove Riviera tan, so this picture was sent for inclusion….

Keep swimming and remember – Marlin and Dory had to swim 1,568 miles to find Nemo – you can just go to the Dutchman and back if you prefer, although you may not find Nemo there.

Myrtleville – Church Bay Swim: Sept. 21st

The postponement from June is working in favour of many swimmers, giving time to get in more OW swims in preparation.  The very warm water is also a great help, of course!

Entries are increasing steadily so if you haven’t done so already, and you wish to enter: click here.

Revised date for Myrtleville to Church Bay Swim

Saturday, September 21st at 5.30PM is the revised date and time for the Myrtleville to Church Bay swim.

Entries made for the original swim will still stand and all will be contacted next week.  Obviously, if the date doesn’t suit, you can just let us know then.

We will also open for new entries for anyone who can make this date, who didn’t enter for the June swim.  Please use the entry form above.

When the weather goes against us, there’s nothing to do but shrug.  Tom McCarthy correctly predicted the miserable conditions this morning – even getting to the Dutchman would have been difficult.  Church Bay was out of the question.  Some people, however, just can’t be told……

Can’t let it go – still touting for entries when all is lost – some people…..

Fortunately, we were able to warn in advance but Ruairi and Rosie Higgins had already flown from the UK.  At least they were able to see Ruairi’s dad, Pat, back in action with the year-round Myrtleville swimmers.  Great to see him recovered from his accident.

Caroline Treacy turned up to enter on the day, but had to settle for a swim with Tom McCarthy in the lumpy waves off the beach.

Eoin O’Riordan also planned to enter on the day and still turned up despite getting four separate emails from different sources letting him know it was cancelled.  Good to know the communications systems were working!  Carol Cashell has hardly been swimming at all lately (3rd lady home Manhattan Island Marathon; winner in Martin Duggan Memorial Swim on Friday night) so she also just had to get a swim in.  Bernard lives at the beach so he was always going to go in….

Even that vastly experienced group were happy to turn at Fennell’s Bay.  Church Bay just wasn’t on the cards today.

Not doing justice to how rough it was – Church Bay, June 16, 2013

We will have to look carefully at the OW Calendar and pick a day with suitable tides.  Hopefully that will be selected next week.  Thanks to everyone who entered.  Next time, fingers crossed.

Postponed: Myrtleville to Church Bay swim

The Safety Committee of the Myrtleville to Church Bay Swim have deferred tomorrow’s swim due to a South Easterly gale warning in place. This is an unfortunate decision to have to take, particularly in light of the nearly 100 swimmers who had entered the event, but it is the correct decision.  The event will take place before Summer’s end and we will be in touch with details.

Myrtleville Monday – June 3, 2013

Siobhan Russell captured all the action on a very crowded beach on the Bank Holiday. The regular swimmers had to share the beach with huge crowd of sun worshippers.

“A” Team – Alan and Anthony – no, not sure what he’s doing….

Tom McCarthy was on hand to give excellent advice on where to swim safely, as ever.

Lots of Triathletes in the water regularly now.  Also many swimmers working towards various Open Water swim races.  A reminder that there is a great range to choose from so get entering from the list here.  One to note is the Martin Duggan Memorial Swim in Fermoy on Friday evening, June 14 .  That will be a beautiful swim.

Lots of swimming now – water heading over 13°c

There’s been lots of activity on the beach in the past week and entries for the Church Bay swim reflect this – going over forty today – as people get their first 1,500m and 2km swims done for the year.  Siobhan, Keith, Rosaleen, Fiona and Bonnie did Myrtleville to Fountainstown on May 31.  Entries for Church Bay expected from all…..

On a slightly longer note, Carol Cashell did her final, final, last swim in Myrtleville before heading off for the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim (45km) next Saturday.  If you want to track all the MIMS swimmers (Carol, Liam Maher and Lisa Cummins from Cork), then go to this page next Saturday.

Summer’s here: make a plan

From Ned Denison:
The cold Spring is OVER. Many are off to their first 2013 triathlon NEXT weekend and needed a dip first, so they’re in the sea this weekend.
Time to get a 2013 PLAN….how about setting your goal for one of these?  Wetsuit swimmers VERY WELCOME at all.
Swim Ireland membership is required ONLY for the Fermoy swim…two of the events are free and one of these is swim optional (so no excuses):

Sandycove M – come swim with the swimmers who have completed 1,000+ laps in their lifetime!   Get into it…as later in the summer the D Club for 500+ will be run and the M club for 100+ lifetime laps.   Special caps available.  Are you going to be in one of these clubs?  Getting close?
Fermoy – 1 km up the river and enjoy the current on the way back.  A festive atmosphere and well attended by all ages from 12 to 75!
Myrtleville – a straight swim along the coast and if you want to race you’ll find somebody just a % or so slower to beat!   Great view of the lighthouse.
Paraic Casey Celebratory (on summer solstice) – this is the annual event following the tragic loss of Paraic in the Channel last summer.  Come with food, a smile and ready to chat into the late evening.  Swimming?  Well, certainly not after a few burgers!
‘Vibes & Scribes’ Lee Swim 2013 – the classic through the city and under so many bridges.  A great day out and the party continues in town until the early hours.
Dream:   pick one or more of the events
Prepare:   get in the open water soon and get ready
Succeed:  complete the swim, maybe set a new personal best and beat your brother-in-law!
