RNLI Myrtleville to Church Bay swim: support welcome

If anyone isn’t swimming and would be available to provide kayak or boat support for the swim on September 21st at 5.30pm, please contact Bernard Lynch – 086-2257058.

Looks like we will have a high entry, so while we have lots of volunteers already, more are welcome and the more support the better.

Powered by Diesel

Diesel on the North Main Street in Cork very generously gave hoodies and t-shirts to Carol, Bernard and Damian to mark their recent marathon swims.  Thanks to Brian O’Connor for that surprise delivery.  Siobhan Russell was called in for yet more pictures last night!!

It was Monday, so that meant Carol had to have done something spectacular over the weekend.  It’s all getting a bit predictable at this stage.  This week, she was Ladies Winner in the Sandycove Island Challenge in a very fast 22.08.  Imagine how fast she’d be if she hadn’t gone around Bere Island the week before….

A couple of pictures here for Rob Bohane’s mantelpiece.

Long march to the island

The hopes of Myrtleville Swimmers in the Sandycove Challenge tomorrow rest on our seasoned campaigners, Carol Cashell and Eddie Irwin.  Committed Myrtlevillians and founders of the ABS campaign, they travel the long road to the Island on Saturday with our best wishes and some tea and sandwiches for the journey – they’re bound to get hungry going all that way (right, Rob?) 🙂 🙂

You’ll have to read the replies below for the amended picture to make any sense – if even then.

Lots and lots of Myrtlevillians.

Practice swim for Crosshaven Triathlon

For new triathletes, the swim is often the most daunting part of the event.  We will be facilitating a practice swim on the Crosshaven Triathlon course for any 2013 participants who want to get some reassurance they are ready.

The practice swim will take place on Saturday, August 31st at 1.00pm.  Any interested entrants should assemble at Crosshaven pier.

We will have one RIB to take seven swimmers at a time out to Currabinny pier and will have experienced swimmers to swim back with them.  It will be first come, first served basis so expect to have some waiting.

Glenbeg Lake, Ardgroom Swim

Brian O’Shea organised a new swim on the August Bank Holiday weekend in the deep West of West Cork, at Glenbeg lake, near Ardgroom.  It was a great day and a very welcome new addition to the swimming calendar.  Several Myrtleville Swimmers went on tour for the first event.  It’s a beautiful place and – I’m told locally – supplies the fresh water for most of the Beara peninsula.  Hope they treated it after we were in…

Ardgroom Lake – August 4, 2013

Given that it was so far West, I had a vague hope that the real speedsters might stay away and give the plodders a chance for once.  No such luck – not with this crowd around:

Owen, Gabor and Craig – three EC soloists, among other things – no prizes for plodders today

Even Ned Denison can’t keep up with some of them.  He was a bit put out after the race to be so far down the leaderboard (only third), so he claimed it just wasn’t long enough and that it wasn’t really 5k anyway – the face on him…

Ned – not happy with that result.

Sam Russell and Denis Condon both did their longest swims yet – no mean feat in fresh water.

Denis Condon finishes a great swim in Ardgroom Lake.

A really enjoyable day – whether it was 5k or not – and one for next year again.  32 participants in the first event.  Well done, Brian and team.

Gabor made a very nice video on the day:

When the weather goes against us, there’s nothing to do but shrug.  Tom McCarthy correctly predicted the miserable conditions this morning – even getting to the Dutchman would have been difficult.  Church Bay was out of the question.  Some people, however, just can’t be told……

Can’t let it go – still touting for entries when all is lost – some people…..

Fortunately, we were able to warn in advance but Ruairi and Rosie Higgins had already flown from the UK.  At least they were able to see Ruairi’s dad, Pat, back in action with the year-round Myrtleville swimmers.  Great to see him recovered from his accident.

Caroline Treacy turned up to enter on the day, but had to settle for a swim with Tom McCarthy in the lumpy waves off the beach.

Eoin O’Riordan also planned to enter on the day and still turned up despite getting four separate emails from different sources letting him know it was cancelled.  Good to know the communications systems were working!  Carol Cashell has hardly been swimming at all lately (3rd lady home Manhattan Island Marathon; winner in Martin Duggan Memorial Swim on Friday night) so she also just had to get a swim in.  Bernard lives at the beach so he was always going to go in….

Even that vastly experienced group were happy to turn at Fennell’s Bay.  Church Bay just wasn’t on the cards today.

Not doing justice to how rough it was – Church Bay, June 16, 2013

We will have to look carefully at the OW Calendar and pick a day with suitable tides.  Hopefully that will be selected next week.  Thanks to everyone who entered.  Next time, fingers crossed.

Postponed: Myrtleville to Church Bay swim

The Safety Committee of the Myrtleville to Church Bay Swim have deferred tomorrow’s swim due to a South Easterly gale warning in place. This is an unfortunate decision to have to take, particularly in light of the nearly 100 swimmers who had entered the event, but it is the correct decision.  The event will take place before Summer’s end and we will be in touch with details.
