Myrtleville-Church-Bay-2KM – Open Water

Dawn swim – Wednesday, Sept. 18

Soon the mornings will no longer allow us to swim before work.  We’re going to try for one last early morning swim, into daybreak.  We’ll avoid saying a “sunrise” swim – it’s Ireland, it could be cloudy!

So here is your one week warning to arrange whatever you need to do at home/school/work!  Next Wednesday (18th Sept), we will meet at 06.20am to swim at 06.30am in Myrtleville. The route will be determined on the day – towards Fountainstown and back if calm enough, or a leisurely Triangle to the Rock and Bunny’s if a bit rougher. Either way, we should be able to enjoy the day breaking from behind Roches Point.

This invitation is open to ALL OW swimmers, wherever they are from!  Pass the word on, this will probably be our last big ‘group’ OW morning swim for a while….

If we get lucky, it will look like this:

Myrtleville Monday

It is just fantastic to see the crowds swimming in Myrtleville, with over seventy swimmers in the water last night at various stages.  Carol Cashell was down after her pioneering Bere Island swim on Saturday (followed by Spike Island to Cobh on Sunday and she’s off to the pool this morning: “Slow down, Tommy (or Carol), Slow down!”).

Bernard Lynch and Damian O’Neill benefitted from Carol’s help in their marathon swims last week and presented her with some small tokens of appreciation.

Presentation to our hero – champagne, chocolates and flowers for Carol.

The picture above looks very respectable, but things weren’t quite so nice earlier when poor Eleanor asked for some of the choccies based on all her hard work……

They’re all MINE and you’re not getting ANY!! (I told you she was MEAN).

Rebeca Power was back after a few weeks away and James Slowey took time off the bike after his Haute Route adventures to get used to the water again.

Carol eventually agreed to share, so the sisters were friends again….

Siobhan Russell did a great job getting various groups together and managed to organise one large gang before they went in….

Cyril Walsh gave some much-appreciated kayaking support for the practice swim for Crosshaven Tri last Saturday and was down for some training himself tonight with his wife, Barbara Anne.

There’s a fantastic buzz around Myrtleville this Summer and it’s not over yet.  Next up is Crosshaven Tri on Saturday, September 7th and – weather permitting – our own Myrtleville to Church Bay swim on the evening of September 21st.  Keep swimming 🙂

Lots more great pictures from Siobhan Russell online here.

Bye buoy

The yellow buoy near Bunny’s was proving popular at high tide early yesterday evening for swimmers practicing their sprints for Crosshaven Tri.  Unfortunately, one of the other buoys formerly anchored at the Dutchman has started to head towards France, so hopefully nobody used that as a sighting guide.

Dodgy yellow buoy gone to France.

There was a bit of a chill going in, but it still felt quite warm very quickly after that.  Getting in is the hard bit……

Possibly feeling a little colder tonight…..Eleanor Courtney and Carol Cashell.

It always feels great when it’s done, though.

Beach war

Siobhan Russell, as ever, has been busy recording the activities at the beach.  With lots of competitive swims going on and moving closer to the Crosshaven Triathlon, it can get a bit heated at times.  Factions and splinter groups definitely appearing….

It seems it’s getting serious for some…..

I don’t know – and I don’t want to know.

Time to get back to what it’s all about….

Race from the beach – serious Tri preparations going on now.

Speaking of serious swims, Trevor Malone broke the fastest time for an Irish swimmer from Africa to Europe in the last few weeks.  As usual, Bernard was straight in for the photo with the returning hero.  Here they are – to quote Carol Cashell – brown and browner.

The red-head convention is under way shortly in Crosshaven, but Joleen Cronin still has to get her work done for her first attempt at the Crosshaven Triathlon on September 7th.  She’s pictured below with fellow first-timer, Clodagh Monks and our intrepid photographer, Siobhan.  150 individuals and 60 teams are entered and entries are closed. Another fantastic effort by all concerned.

Finally, apparently Tara O’Connell was determined to show off her Barleycove Riviera tan, so this picture was sent for inclusion….

Keep swimming and remember – Marlin and Dory had to swim 1,568 miles to find Nemo – you can just go to the Dutchman and back if you prefer, although you may not find Nemo there.

Church Bay Directions

As Myrtleville continues to be thronged, several people have asked for directions to Church Bay for Monday evening’s swim, so here goes:

Church Bay Directions

Church Bay Directions

From Crosshaven the total journey is about 1.3km.  Take the right hand fork in the Y at Cronin’s pub.  The left fork will take you to Fort Camden.  If you get there, go back!  Follow the narrow road up the hill and past the graveyard on your left and keep right at the next Y.  This means crossing the traffic, so do yield 🙂 .  Then take the first left down the hill and find a place to park at the side of the road.

Liner adds a nice backdrop

The regular busy Monday night crews on the beach last night.  James Slowey (Snr) had his usual couch-potato weekend – just a quick Olympic Tri on Saturday to stretch the legs.  With the sea temperature in Kilkee for the event up around 15c, we’re starting to wonder what we’re doing wrong in Cork: still closer to 12c here but we’re now so used to it we think it’s fine.  James Slowey (Jnr) – AKA “the young fella” – did a good 500m swim last night also.

A new member for Myrtleville Swimmers….

They said it would never happen – but he finally made the long trek from Sandycove to Myrtleville. Actually Rob “The Bull” Bohane just made a short 15 minute trek from his house, but we’ll ignore that for the sake of poetic licence.

Having accused everyone else of abandoning the Island, he came to see what the fuss was about at the Dutchman.  Again, more poetic licence – he came to avoid getting stuck at low tide in Sandycove.

Never mind the reasons – he came to Myrtleville with his 1000+ Sandycove laps done and here’s the proof:

He finally cracked – Rob Bohane at Myrtleville with local guide, Bernard

How long will it take you to do 1,000 laps of the Dutchman, Rob?

One day on from the storm…

Lovely sunshine last night, but a serious swell still on the water further out, after the Easterly that stopped the Church Bay swim.  Great crowd of over thirty swimming.

Everyone wanted their picture taken with the returning hero, Carol Cashell, back from New York.  Some guys even got dressed up for it..

Peter O’Mahony was in with his SafeSwimmer Float and swears by it.  He says there’s no drag and it’s certainly more visible than just our hats.

To explain the next series of pictures, Siobhan Russell was lurking in the waves with her camera demanding her subjects perform for “Baywatch” shots – a few of them with very unlikely “male models” – see last picture below.

Another great Monday night and a real pleasure after Sunday’s washout.  Lots more pictures online here – just not enough room to post them all.

Postponed: Myrtleville to Church Bay swim

The Safety Committee of the Myrtleville to Church Bay Swim have deferred tomorrow’s swim due to a South Easterly gale warning in place. This is an unfortunate decision to have to take, particularly in light of the nearly 100 swimmers who had entered the event, but it is the correct decision.  The event will take place before Summer’s end and we will be in touch with details.
