Saturday swims

As well as the usual 08.15 swim tomorrow, there’s a group going at 07.15 to do two hours, if anyone is interested in joining.  Forecast is for light NW winds, so it should be very swimmable.

Swim Safe and if someone needs help, don’t fall in to the trap of the modern era.

Swim times for April & May

Planned swim times for Myrtleville Beach. These are the times most likely that a group will assemble. Email myrtlevilleswimmers@gmail.com if you’re interested any day.  Or tweet @MyrtlevilleS.

These times can vary and are weather dependent, so definitely check in advance if you’re coming on your own.  Swim at your own risk. Don’t swim alone. Always swim in groups.

  • Monday: 18:00
  • Tuesday: 06:15
  • Friday: 06:15
  • Saturday: 08:15

Always remember – swim safe.  Good information here for anyone swimming in Myrtleville.

First early swim planned

Swimming today, Thursday at 4.30pm and Saturday at 08.15.

Next week, the plan is for a first early swim of the year on Thursday, March 20 at 06.30.  The light will be with us for a week or two before the clock changes, so we might as well take advantage!

Monday nights start up again on March 31 at 6pm.  We had some nice candidates for “safety boats” among the liners last year.  Looks like the first of the applicants for this year has arrived – anchored off the beach yesterday.

Schooner off Myrtleville – March 12, 2014.

Here’s a more close-up version of the Gorch Fock by Hugh Mockler:

March – in like a lamb and out like a….Gary?

Good conditions and almost nine degrees in the water gave a very nice start to March for Saturday’s swimmers.

Siobhan makes it in front of the camera and poses – of course.

Our daily swimmers have enjoyed the warmer than usual water right through the last few months.  “Like a bath”, as Tom says!

Tom & Pat – daily swimmers and an example to us all.

Even though it’s not Ice Mile calibre, cold(ish) water can do strange things to the mind.  That’s the only explanation I can think of for Gary’s carry-on in this series of pictures, as he throws off the wetsuit and works on his acclimatisation outside the water.

This is one display Denis wasn’t expecting to have to watch – Gary springs into action.

‘REAL men don’t wear skirts, lads – just togs!’ Gary Frost continues the show.

The Finale – Would you buy a used car from this man?   Gary Frost doing…..something. You’ll have to ask him.

More returnees last week with Rebeca Power notably going straight back into the sea in togs.  Cold?  What cold?  Aiming for Thursday at 4.30pm and Saturday at 08.15, weather permitting.

Leaving February and heading for March

We’ll have our last February 2014 swim on Thursday 27th at 4.30 and then on to March!  Saturday’s swim is at a later time of 10.00 this week.

It was getting windy on Monday, but the pictures below make it look worse than it was – there was definitely a calm bit. Siobhan was getting scenic views again and some swimmers drifted into the frame.

Closer to 9ºc than 8ºc in the sea.  Very un-February 🙂

Times and Trees

We’re sticking to 4.30pm Monday and Thursday this week and Saturday at 08.15, weather permitting.

There were different groups in on Friday, Saturday and Sunday this weekend.  Temperatures remaining over 8c in the water, so the traditional coldest month isn’t biting just yet.  Great to see so many people sticking with open water for the Winter.

Still some interesting obstacles being washed down by the heavy rain – wouldn’t like to swim into this one.

Christmas comes early – or late – on Myrtleville Beach. Saturday, February 8, 2014.

How the ‘Turkey Swims’  work:
** Swimmers Sign In and pay €2 on the  day of Swim. (someone will have a money box and sign-In  sheet).
** Money Collected goes towards Prizes drawn on 22nd  Dec at Sandycove. These include Butcher Vouchers (instead of an actual  Turkey) and many other spot prizes (wine / chocolates /  selection boxes etc!). We had over 20 prizes last year.
** Don’t Forget to Pay and Sign In, if you don’t you  are not in the draw!
** Make however many swims you can, 1 –  10.
** The more you swim, the more times you are entered  for the ‘draw’.
** A Swim will be defined as being in the water for  more than 10minutes!, Doesn’t have to be a full lap to the Dutchman.  Togs or  Wetsuit, up to you, swim safe, stay warm, swim with similar speed buddies.

Saturday is the new Monday

With Monday nights finished, Saturday at 8.15am is the only set time for the week during the Winter.  Despite the worst possible forecast, we had a great turn-out on this weekend, with seventeen swimmers venturing in.

Maeve Mulcahy took this picture, showing that swimming to the Dutchman wasn’t advisable, but we had a “calm bit” of 300 metres that was enjoyable.

Myrtleville – Saturday, November 2, 2013: a bit of texture on the water….

We checked afterwards and were sure everyone had got out safely, so it was a bit of a shock to see a few extras were washed up and displayed on the wall of Jimmy Long’s:

Myrtleville Slimmers – 12.2C in the water, but this crowd felt the cold…..

There’s a night out open to all swimmers on Saturday next at 8pm in Bunny’s and Turkey Swims on Saturday and Sunday in Sandycove.  Sea swimming is a year-round sport!

Last Monday night of 2013

Hard to believe it’s over for another year.  We had a huge increase in numbers for Myrtleville Mondays this year, but there was only a hard core left, on a bad night for the last one.

Last Monday of 2013 – just three swimmers – Tom McCarthy, Bernard Lynch & John Russell – with Denis Condon: 21/10/2013.

Anne Sheehy brought her camera and got a couple of pictures. I think she was using the Siobhan Russell Technique for rough days (“No, I’m not going in there – someone has to take the pictures…..on you go, the rest of you……and remember to smile for the camera…..”).

Tom McCarthy braves the waves – 21/1o/2013.

John Russell & Bernard Lynch – it does look a bit lumpy…21/10/2013.

See you all on Monday, March 31, 2014.  Only 160 Days to go 🙂

Shift work

It’s so busy at the beach, we’re working in shifts.  First group in on Saturday was for Gary Frost’s birthday sunrise swim, with full outdoor catering afterwards.

Gary Frost’s birthday group – too many to name, but that’s Gary with the balloon on the far left and Lemmy the Dog is there too.

Second shift was just in time for the ferry to pass. Welcome back to Maeve and welcome to David Dineen, who moved to Crosshaven recently.

Open water, sea swimming in Cork, Ireland

David Dineen, Ciaran Byrne, Rob “it’s much easier to get parking in Sandycove” Bohane, Bernard Lynch, Damian O’Neill, Maeve Mulcahy, Eddie Irwin and Neddy “hurry up, it’s cold” Irwin.

The third shift got creative and took one car to Fountainstown, then swam back to Myrtleville.

Open water, sea swimming in Cork, Ireland

Ross O’Connor, Keith Hyde, Aidan Mangan & Kieran Callinan.

A standard time of 8.15am on Saturdays will run throughout the Winter.  It’s over 15c in the water, so it’s not time to even think about cold water yet.

If you’re looking to swim with others and don’t have a group, that’s the time to aim for. Everyone welcome.
