Only ten days to go. Get entered now on Active.
With a lifetime’s thanks to the other Damian O’Neill – http://www.theundertones.com.
Entries for the world’s most important swim, the RNLI Myrtleville – Church Bay on June 10th, are coming in steadily, but it’s worrying how many people are putting off their qualifying 1,500m sea swim –
“until May”. It’s May now. Has been for ten days.
“until it’s warmer”. It’s Ireland. Don’t delay for what may never be. Anyway, the sea is up over 12c. Our swim often runs at 13c. Get used to it by swimming in it.
“until closer to the swim”. Under 30 days. Tick Tock.
“until my pool classes finish”. Pool? Wha’? Get outta there.
By way of encouragement for the masses, Mae Irwin joined us to do 2km in Myrtleville this week. At dawn. Twice – Monday and Wednesday, so far. Just to show it’s fine for anyone who was putting it off.
Mae is 10. Ten. Years. Old.
So, tell me again – what’s your excuse?
Get in. Get qualified. Get entered. Mae says it’s fine.
Thanks to Donna Galvin and Eoin O’Riordan for scheduling this perfectly timed qualifier for our RNLI swim on June 10 😉

Entries are coming in steadily and with lots of people now getting 1,500m+ done in the sea, make sure to get yours in for June 10th as well. The swim is now an event of the Cork Harbour Festival and will take place on the same day as the Ocean to City Race.

A mere five months and it’ll be time for the RNLI Myrtleville to Church Bay Swim, 2017 – at 5pm on Saturday, June 10th.
Here’s a lovely bit of work by Denis Condon and Anne Sheehy, to remind you why it’s worth training for this highlight of the swimming calendar.
Lots of info and reporting of previous events here:
Entries will open in late March. Keep training – it’s worth it.
From Ray McArdle:
The 6th Annual Courtmacsherry Lifeboat Swim takes place at Blind Strand, near the picturesque fishing village of Courtmacsherry at 1.00 pm on Saturday, August 13th. Courtmacsherry is a 45 minute drive from the Bandon Road roundabout. The swim will be well sign posted from the village. Please leave plenty of time for parking and registration (by 12.15 at the latest). The safety briefing will take place at 12.45pm.
The swim course starts on the beach at Blind Strand and proceeds anti-clockwise around 2 markers.
Participants can choose between 1 lap (1.5K) or 2 laps (3K). Swimmers who elect to do 2 laps will run/walk a short distance on the beach prior to starting lap 2.
The Courtmacsherry volunteers will provide soup and sandwiches for all participants and volunteers. This year I am delighted to announce that we have new sponsors for the event. IT@Cork Skillnet will be providing the first 100 swimmers registered with a generous goody bag. Really nice gift inside each one.
All proceeds from the swim go to the Courtmacsherry Lifeboat and Swim Ireland membership is not required.
Registration this year is again via Active. http://www.active.com/courtmacsherry-cork/water-sports/swimming/courtmacsherry-lifeboat-swim-2016
Registration closes on Thursday, August 11th. Online registration costs €15, or you can register on the day for €20, until the maximum number is reached.
If you know of anyone who would like to volunteer to kayak, please have them contact me directly. (Ray McArdle -087-754-6953).
Any further updates will be posted on the event web page and emailed to those registered.
I look forward to seeing you for a fun swim on August 13th.
