Swimming with the ships

Riana Parsons took a couple of great pictures in Myrtleville yesterday.  Have to say, I didn’t notice the second ship over the tops of the waves, which were a lot higher in the middle of them than they look in the pictures!

RNLI Myrtleville to Church Bay Swim – Entries open

The RNLI Myrtleville to Church Bay 2km open water sea swim takes place on Sunday 16th June at 10:00am on an incoming tide.

Entries can be made here. Entry fee is €15, payable on the day and donated to Crosshaven RNLI.

All participants must be able to verify a minimum of one 1,500m open water swim in 2013. We strongly recommend you have done a longer distance – or several 1,500m swims. This is a fantastic, but challenging swim and not to be attempted without proper preparation.  If you want to practice, come to Myrtleville any Monday night at 6pm. Check the swim times on this site each month or join our google group for updates.

Panoramic view of Myrtleville

Smartphones are great for allowing complete amateurs have access to tools that should probably only be in the hands of professionals!  I tried to get a panoramic view of Myrtleville in the mirror-calm conditions last weekend, but Bernard Lynch’s version below came out better.  Since that was with cold hands after his swim, he might have a future as a Pro yet….

Stormy weather

Riana Parsons very kindly passed on some fantastic pictures she took from Myrtleville (closer to Fennell’s Bay) towards Roches Point.  It wasn’t very swimmable…

Last open water swim of 2012

One last sea swim to see out the year and James Slowey Jnr. got  a great picture of the beach to mark it. Pity about the three guys who got in the way……

Cold water swimming? It’s toasty…..

Avoiding the pool at all costs, we had a visit from cold water specialist, Finbarr Hedderman.  Mr. Finbarr pronounced the 9.8c water “toasty” and enjoyed 40 minutes in the sunshine and very swimmable water.  Open water swimming in Ireland in December can still be a pleasure!  Unusually, though, we got to watch a surfer trying to catch the waves at the Dutchman rocks.

Tom McCarthy honoured at ILDSA awards

Owen O’Keeffe, the Fermoy Fish, organised a great evening in the Grand Hotel Fermoy for Ned Denison’s annual celebration of marathon swimming in Cork and a combined event for the first time with the Irish Long Distance Swimmers Association (ILDSA) awards.  Several Myrtleville regulars got honourable mention and Tom McCarthy was presented with an award for his Channel Relay swim this Summer. Thanks to Donal Buckley for the picture.

Liz Buckley & others are organising the 2012 Turkey Series.  They have bowed to demand from the swimming public and scheduled a date for the jewel in Cork’s swimming crown….. see you at 13:30 on Myrtleville beach, Sunday, December 2.  Be there early, as we’re expecting a huge crowd……maybe our local Lucky Duck, might make an appearance, to support fowl friends. No comments please about who is the biggest turkey.

From Liz:

Format is the same as always, €2 per entry, you can swim, walk, paddle. Proceeds all go towards the prizes at the end. More times you enter, the better your chances!

Still swimming on Saturdays….

Bernard Lynch and James Slowey recorded a -1C air temperature for their latest Saturday morning swim, but had the benefit of catching this great sight of the ferry arriving in at sunrise….

We’re still swimming most Saturday mornings, so get in touch if you want to join in. It’s much warmer in the water than on land……a balmy 11.8C last Saturday.
