Ned’s long swims list.

Yet another of Ned Denison’s contributions to swimming is maintaining the catchily-titled County Cork plus some of Kerry Coastline – Long Swims -17-4-14  for swims of 5k and over.

A note from Ned as he looks to review the list to approve it, up to the end of 2013, as an accurate record:

“PLEASE make sure you are listed where appropriate.

The easiest way is to search on your name…email me any changes at ned.denison@corkopenwater.com.

If you are not YET on the list…it starts with a dream…”

Mind the rocks.

Swimming around past Bunny’s towards Fountainstown this week, reminded me of just how far out the rocks come and how easy it is to forget them when the tide is in.  These pictures make it pretty clear!

Back in the sea

Monday night saw more returnees as the water temp hit 11c.  That and the sunshine on land almost removed any post-swim shivers.

Carol ditched her wetsuit as the Winter ends and Joleen got into the swing of things, abandoning hers too.

Maeve Mulcahy swam most of the Winter, but missed the last six weeks.  No bother to her getting back into it, especially on such a nice evening.

Gone to the Gaeltacht – Hat in An Spideal, Galway.

Unfortunately, it seems that one place it won’t be seen is at Sandycove.  After a hasty committee meeting on Sunday, bye-law no. 147.b.11.A.54 (proposed by F. Hedderman and seconded by R. Bohane) banned the wearing of Myrtleville hats around the Island.  Poor Eoin O’Riordan had to do the walk of shame back to his car to change hats and then Mr. Finbarr made him go around the island six times as punishment.  Ah, lads…..

Weekend swims

Lots of swimming at the weekend, with groups in right through Friday to Sunday.  It was slightly chillier in the morning at 8.5c, but a nice warm 11c on land made up for it.  Afternoon swimmers found it over 10c in the water – very nice for April.

We had a new swimmer, Sean, down on Saturday morning for the first time in Myrtleville.  I was helpfully explaining where we’d be going and what to do if he wanted to turn back etc.  What I should have been doing was asking him how fast he was.  I knew pretty soon as he disappeared over the horizon ahead of me with the likes of Eddie and Eoin.  I could almost hear him laughing – but he was too far ahead. No need to worry there, then 🙂

Swimming tonight at 6.00pm, then Tuesday at 4.30pm, Thursday morning in the water at 6.30AM, Friday morning 8.15am (I know not everyone is off, but some are so why not go swimming!) and Saturday 8.15am, as usual.

Swim hats

It may have taken just a bit longer than planned, but our new hats are now printed and available in yellow or white.  Thanks to everyone who entered and our sponsors from Diesel, North Main Street and Centra, Crosshaven.

The judges decided they liked parts of three different entries – from three different families!   No expense was spared in finding the leading experts in the field to combine these into a logo for print (thanks, Joleen!) and here’s the result.  No longer sad…

Happy Hat.

With input from the Frost, O’Neill and Russell family entries, the logo combines Roches Point, the Dutchman rocks and a piece of graffiti familiar to everyone who swims in Myrtleville – “Edging Insanity” – from the doors of the old boathouse.

For Rock Trivia fans: Edging Insanity was a short-lived Waterford band, who played in the Pine Lodge – or maybe just visited the beach –  and left their mark forever: or until the doors get painted!!  They split in 2010 😦
