This is great. Well worth watching. Fantastic work by Denis and Anne.
From Anne Sheehy:
Here is the video Denis shot on his Go Pro Camera last Saturday morning. None of the filming in the water came out so Gordon Adair was kind enough to let us use his shots and Siobhan gave us permission to use some of hers.
Real clubs run by serious people have AGMs. I was reminded of this when I received Angela Harris’ excellent minutes for the Sandycove AGM. It made me wonder – if Myrtleville Swimmers had an AGM, how might that go?
Presumably it was a predecessor of Siobhan’s who took these fantastic pictures of Myrtleville around 1905, complete with swimmers starting their swims.
Very interesting to see the old coastguard station so clearly in the pictures. With all the scrub and trees around it cleared in the last month, it’s very clear from the water now.
These are from a Facebook group called Old Photos of Cork City & County – well worth logging onto if you’re a Facebook user. It’s a great resource and being added to constantly.
While we’d all like to be in the sea for the year, Irish temperatures and daylight hours mean the pool is a necessary evil.
Some people have taken it a bit too far, though, and gone for training sessions in Douglas Pool on Wednesdays, with Ms. Cashell in command – no slacking there.
Clodagh, Joleen, Siobhan & Gary – disciples of Sensei Cashell – ‘The Mean One’.
There’s a group in the sea today, Thursday, at 4.30pm and the usual swim at 08.15 on Saturday morning. All welcome, as ever.
Amazingly, we’re still up at 11.5c to 12c in the sea and the Winter is being kept at bay. 14 swimmers on Saturday morning and another good group today. The sheer joy of swimming this late in the year is driving some people to spontaneous displays of happiness….
The Water Temperatures have Myrtleville Swimmers jumping for joy……………
Denis Condon was in six days this week – he’s an example for us all!
Denis Condon, Carmen Burns, Tom McCarthy & Anne Sheehy – no stopping them!
Siobhan’s new waterproof camera is getting trial outings – we’re expecting great things from that in the coming months.
Siobhan’s new camera – get ready for the view from the Water.
And finally, we’re always happy to share the beach with all-comers…..
Nobody said you had to be horses to swim through the Winter….
Once again – DON’T FORGET THE LOGO COMPETITION. Get the artist in your life into action 🙂
It was a great night in Bunny’s on Saturday, thanks to all of the organisers – Rosaleen, Siobhan, Joleen, Niamh etc. We started the day with the normal 8.15 swim and had a good turnout of ten, with a second group of sixteen arriving at 9.30, I’m told. Still busy on the beach.
Saturday November 9 – swim to get ready for the party.
I was delighted to see Tom and Pat there early in the evening – they said they had to head home for bedtime about 9.00 and also to be ready – as ever – to swim on Sunday morning 🙂
The real Myrtleville Swimmers – Tom Bermingham and Pat Higgins – with a young fella.
Rosaleen McKeown claimed that her poem was her first ever, but it was so good I’m sure she’s been scribbling away for years and years – it was hilarious.
Rosaleen ‘Emily Dickinson eat your heart out’ McKeown.
It was a night for training plans and alcohol bans to be put aside – and they were.
Gary Frost, Richard Hawkins, Bernard Lynch, Caroline Fegan, Fiona Foley, Joleen Cronin & Eddie Irwin – not a drop of alcohol consumed (or maybe I mean spilled) between them .
Sham Riordan gets a rare pass for a night out – with Vincent Harrington.
Nora Irwin, Carol Cashell & Maeve Mulcahy.
Loads more pictures on Siobhan Russell’s facebook page as always. She got due recognition for all her wonderful work when the Crosshaven Friday swimmers presented her with an underwater camera. A whole new range of options for next year!!
Niamh O’Connor, Rosaleen McKeown and Siobhan Russell with her well-deserved gift.
Running in the background all night was a fantastic video of lots of Siobhan’s pictures from the year. What we couldn’t hear was the soundtrack Joleen Cronin had put to it – who knew there were so many songs about swimming?? Really great work by them both. It’s 22 minutes long, so get a coffee and relax. It’s worth it!
Siobhan Russell, Joleen Cronin, Rosaleen McKeown, Niamh O’Connor and loads of others (real sharing of the workload going on here) are organising an end of season celebration and party.
It’s not just for swimmers (since we’ll still be swimming all Winter and the season never ends!) and all are invited.
Saturday, November 9th at 8pm in Bunnyconnellan, Myrtleville. No cover charge.
If possible, let them know on Facebook if you are going to attend, or just arrive on the night. All welcome.
Great to see that RTE have awarded the prize of Ireland’s best swimming spot in any weather (and tides, Rob) to Myrtleville. We know that because if you watch the forecast carefully, you’ll see our home ground proudly on display……..
Evelyn Cusack and Ireland’s number 1 swimming spot, as voted by the viewers of RTE Weather.
We really got lucky with the weather last Saturday – if we had faced this Monday’s weather, it would have meant another swim cancellation. Monday was great fun to surf around, though…for those willing to try it….
Hmmmm – will I go in or won’t I? No….Siobhan opts for the “I’m taking pictures” option…
First to test the waters – Joanne & Tadhg were early: conducting sea-lice experiments.
Next in were Diarmuid Herlihy & Rian Herlihy – Rian is swimming the Straits of Gibraltar in 2014. Diarmuid already knows the route!
Over a dozen swimmers on a night like this – no stopping us 🙂 .
Surfers
Peter O’Mahony & David O’Mahony – with Safe Swimmers
Monday nights will continue until October 21st – the clocks go back on October 27th, so that will be that.
We’re also swimming at 8.15am on Saturdays, which will continue right through the Winter. Some afternoon swims are also planned and we’ll post these details once we’ve worked them out. All welcome, as ever.
