Congratulations to Carol Cashell

Myrtleville regular, Carol Cashell, showed how it’s done with a fantastic third place overall finish in the 25th International Tran Self-Transcendence Marathon Swim in Lake Zurich 2012.

She was 2nd lady home in a time of 7 hrs 39 for the 26km swim.  A truly amazing performance.  She might even be signing autographs at her Ballycotton Island swim on August 31, so get your entries in!  See the link for the swim above.

Well done Carol, inspirational!

Crosshaven Challenge 2012

CROSSHAVEN TRIATHLON 2012

CROSSHAVEN TRIATHLON 2012

Saturday September 01st sees the 10th annual Crosshaven Triathlon take place and by all accounts this year is expected to be the biggest and best yet with a large number of entries received by the organisers.

‘There’s going to be a real carnival atmosphere in Crosshaven during the triathlon’, remarked event chairman Bernard Lynch.

The event covers a 500 metre swim from Currabinny Pier to Hugh Coveney Pier in Crosshaven, a 10 kilometre cycle to Leary’s Cross and back and finally a 5 kilometre run around the centre of the village with the finish line situated at the Centra Supermarket along Strand Road.

Teams of three – one for each discipline – along with over 80 individual competitors will take part this year in what has become the largest sporting event in Crosshaven in recent years. Hundreds of spectators are expected to line the route cheering on the swimmers, cyclists and runners as they take part in each event, with a huge number expected in the centre of Crosshaven and towards the finish line.

Amongst those competing this year will be a number of Irish International swimmers, English Channel swimmers and local politicians with Minister Simon Coveney, a regular participant and supporter, scheduled to take part. Members of clubs, schools, groups and local organisations are also taking part, adding to the local aspect on the day – many hoping to improve on last years times and fulfilling a personal accomplishment in just taking part. Funds generated from the event will go towards the  Crosshaven Tidy Towns Committee, Crosshaven Development Committee, Crosshaven St  Vincent de Paul and the Crosshaven Camogie club. This will  bring the amount raised since its inception to well over €120,000.

Members of the Crosshaven Vintage Cycle and Classic Car Club will have a number of their vintage vehicles on show in the main car park in the centre of the village.

The 10th annual Crosshaven triathlon commences at 5pm sharp on Saturday 1st September. Traffic restrictions apply for the event duration.

Night Swimming

Leaving no stone unturned in his preparations for his Channel Relay next week, Tom McCarthy was swimming at night with Bernard Lynch.  Some poor unsuspecting young couple on the beach had their plans interrupted when Tom materialised from the dark and insisted they take this picture for posterity.  I hope the two young ones are still together and the trauma didn’t break them up…

Swimming in Open Water is just like swimming in the Pool, isn’t it?

This may not be the same advice all coaches would give on rough water swimming but it’s topical in this Irish Summer so we’ll reproduce it here from an Article courtesy of Swim Smooth – Feel for the Water:

Something we often hear on internet forums is that swimming in open water is just like swimming in the pool. Unfortunately it isn’t!

What do you do when you turn up at a race and are faced with conditions like these:

Our tips:

Stay calm before the start and back yourself to cope.

– As soon as you’re swimming, make sure you exhale smoothly into the water, this will help you relax and stay aerobic.

– Use a slightly straighter arm recovery to give you a greater arm clearance over the surface of the water.

Focus on momentum in your stroke: shorten things a touch and keep a strong rhythm to help punch through waves and chop. It’s a little like using a smaller gear on the bike, you turn over quicker but each stroke is easier, keeping the effort level the same.

Avoid over-gliding in your stroke at all costs or you will be swamped by waves and chop, and could end up being swept backwards!

Enjoy the challenge and repeat to yourself a positive mantra that works for you, e.g. when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Cheesy but effective!

Remember that everyone finds swimming in rough conditions hard and swims slower than in flat conditions, even professional athletes. But cope well using the tips above and you will doing better than 90% of the field and will put a lot of time and distance into your competitors.

Whilst you may not be planning to be swimming in rough open water conditions, even a mirror flat lake will be churned into a lumpy, choppy mess by other swimmers in your race. For that reason a super-long pool stroke is rarely effective in open water.

RNLI Myrtleville-Church Bay swim: June 24, 2012

Chris Mintern and Carol Cashell made it three wins in three years at the third annual Myrtleville to Church Bay Swim, held last weekend in glorious Summer sunshine.

76 swimmers took part this year with various levels of open sea swimming, ranging from seasoned English Channel swimmers to relative novices.  The winner crossed the finish line in 28.20, over two minutes ahead of Ned Denison and Owen O’Keeffe in third with Carol Cashell the first lady home and fourth place overall on 32.25.

Conditions were described as ‘challenging’ as a North West blew into the faces of the swimmers as they turned the headland.  This became even more difficult for the slower swimmers who had to contend with the tide turning against them after an hour – so much so that only 50 completed the 2 kilometre course with 26 retiring, finding the swim a little too demanding this year.

Speaking at the prize giving ceremony which was held in the Crosshaven RNLI station afterwards, event organiser Bernard Lynch went on to congratulate all of the swimmers in taking part in the event, raising funds for the local RNLI. He thanked the co-operation and assistance from members of the RNLI, Coast Guard, committee members, supporters and members of Funkytown Kayaks at Myrtleville who followed the competitors along the course. Seventeen year old  Chris Mintern , an experienced swimmer and triathlon competitor, who won the Monkstown triathlon only last week, claimed his third title in a row, as did seasoned competitor Carol Cashell.
