Swimming around past Bunny’s towards Fountainstown this week, reminded me of just how far out the rocks come and how easy it is to forget them when the tide is in. These pictures make it pretty clear!

Back in the sea
Monday night saw more returnees as the water temp hit 11c. That and the sunshine on land almost removed any post-swim shivers.

Anne O’Connor, Dan Sweeney, Tomás Ó Loingsigh & Barbara-Anne Richardson getting back in to the sea for 2014.
Carol ditched her wetsuit as the Winter ends and Joleen got into the swing of things, abandoning hers too.
Maeve Mulcahy swam most of the Winter, but missed the last six weeks. No bother to her getting back into it, especially on such a nice evening.
Swimming tomorrow, Thursday morning at 06.30 and then Friday and Saturday mornings at 08.15. Forecast looks good.
The hat tours continue.
The new hats continue to fan out across the globe – or the country, at least.
In Dublin..
And Galway..
Unfortunately, it seems that one place it won’t be seen is at Sandycove. After a hasty committee meeting on Sunday, bye-law no. 147.b.11.A.54 (proposed by F. Hedderman and seconded by R. Bohane) banned the wearing of Myrtleville hats around the Island. Poor Eoin O’Riordan had to do the walk of shame back to his car to change hats and then Mr. Finbarr made him go around the island six times as punishment. Ah, lads…..
Weekend swims
Lots of swimming at the weekend, with groups in right through Friday to Sunday. It was slightly chillier in the morning at 8.5c, but a nice warm 11c on land made up for it. Afternoon swimmers found it over 10c in the water – very nice for April.
We had a new swimmer, Sean, down on Saturday morning for the first time in Myrtleville. I was helpfully explaining where we’d be going and what to do if he wanted to turn back etc. What I should have been doing was asking him how fast he was. I knew pretty soon as he disappeared over the horizon ahead of me with the likes of Eddie and Eoin. I could almost hear him laughing – but he was too far ahead. No need to worry there, then 🙂
Blackwater Tri continued their OW sessions.
A sure sign of Summer is the ferry bringing in the tourists. Always good to see.
Swimming tonight at 6.00pm, then Tuesday at 4.30pm, Thursday morning in the water at 6.30AM, Friday morning 8.15am (I know not everyone is off, but some are so why not go swimming!) and Saturday 8.15am, as usual.
Shiny in the sun
Hats on Tour
Swim hats
It may have taken just a bit longer than planned, but our new hats are now printed and available in yellow or white. Thanks to everyone who entered and our sponsors from Diesel, North Main Street and Centra, Crosshaven.
The judges decided they liked parts of three different entries – from three different families! No expense was spared in finding the leading experts in the field to combine these into a logo for print (thanks, Joleen!) and here’s the result. No longer sad…
With input from the Frost, O’Neill and Russell family entries, the logo combines Roches Point, the Dutchman rocks and a piece of graffiti familiar to everyone who swims in Myrtleville – “Edging Insanity” – from the doors of the old boathouse.
For Rock Trivia fans: Edging Insanity was a short-lived Waterford band, who played in the Pine Lodge – or maybe just visited the beach – and left their mark forever: or until the doors get painted!! They split in 2010 😦
Hats are available at the cost price of €8 each from Bernard Lynch, Damian O’Neill or Carol Cashell.
Presentation over – time for a swim!
Thanks again to everyone who entered and assisted.
Saturday swims and poses.
Saturday was a bit dreary but the water was swimmable and over 9c. Two groups in during the day – the normal 8.15am and a group from Blackwater Tri at 1.00. Amazingly, Siobhan arrived to take pictures of the first group and then swam with the second. Dedicated to the cause and no mistake 🙂
Fair dues to the Blackwater group, they knew she was a hero and gave her a throne.
As ever, when Siobhan says “pose” –
We’ll be launching the new swim hats on an unsuspecting world at 5.45 today, before the usual 6.00 swim. Swims also planned on Thursday at 4.30pm and Saturday at 08.15.
First Monday night of 2014
Twelve swimmers in lovely sunshine and 9.5c water on the last day of March. The water was a small bit lumpy with a SE wind, but still a great start to the Monday nights for 2014.
4.30pm this Thursday and Saturday at 08.15, as usual.
Watch that wave, Anne.
As has been noted on this site regularly, Denis Condon has been a diligent swimmer all Winter. An example to us all, he has missed very few days in the sea. Last week he was in Fountainstown and decided to ditch the wetsuit. It was a momentous occasion, witnessed by Anne & Carmen and recorded for posterity by a passing delivery man (fair dues, Bernard).
Not content with a photo, Anne Sheehy waded in a few feet to record the event. Denis ploughed through the waves and Anne was so focused – well, just watch the 23 seconds of the video 🙂
The non-humorous part is that Anne says the slipway in Fountainstown is like a cheese grater if you meet it the wrong way! Ouch. The good news was she was fully recovered for the first Monday night last night and duly posed for Siobhan!
